We are fifth graders at Edison School in Macomb, IL. In language arts we wrote quatrain poems about Indian tribes
we studied. We hope you like our poems.

The Cheyenne

When the U.S charged the Cheyenne flew.
When the Cheyenne flew they went to join the Sioux.
When the U.S. charged they were under General Custer's command.
The reason the U.S. charged was for the hunting land.

The Cheyenne hunted on horseback.
The trail they left was hard to track.
They liked to move from state to state.
When asked to fight - they were really great.

The Sioux

The Sioux resisted the whites greatly.
They were a typical plains indian tribe.

They have done sun dances forever, even lately.
The Sioux are a easy tribe to describe.

The Sioux had many great leaders,
and they were very courageous.
The Sioux women were very good seeders.
The great Sioux will be remembered for ages.

The Navajo Indians

In Arizona and New Mexico they did live,
They prayed for rain that thier gods might give.
They are very well-known for the Navajo Long Walk,
Athabascan Linguistic is the way they always talk.

The Navajo farmed and herded their sheep,
If they didn't get rain, they would weep.
The women were important because things they would weave,
When white men came to their homeland they had to leave.

The Navajo farmed squash, beans, melons, and maize,
The women wove blankets that would eventually amaze
"Dinneh" or "The People" was what they called themselves,
Unlike the Anasazi, they didn't build houses on shelves.

THE IROQUOIS

They lived on vast woodland of the Northeast.
Where they celebrated the harvest with a feast.
They got firearms from the Dutch.
Which they enjoyed the firearm power very much.

The U.S. Government forced the Indians west.
The white men really thought it was the best.

They loved their three sister gods.
Which they received a whole lot.

The Sioux

At the ceremonies they made lots of sound.
The horses would leave tracks in the ground.

They were great warriors and loved to win.
In wars they used arrows and moved in.

They would stay a while and travel.
Around the Great Lakes they walked on gravel.
