Welcome to our plant identification web site.

Last update - September 12, 2006

Here you find descriptions and photographs of over 30 species of plants that grow in on the island of Newfoundland. Over 60 students from Grades 4 - 6 are worked on the original project started in 2001.  This year we will add a number of new plants to this site.  As students finish their projects, they will be linked from the appropriate category on the left.

The Photographs

All photos of Plants of Newfoundland were taken by K. Bruce Lane, award-winning teacher and photographer.  Students and teachers worldwide MAY use any photographs on this site for school projects, and do not have to ask permission. For anyone other than students and teachers who may wish to use the photos from this site, please be advised that the  photographs are protected by copyright and may not be reproduced in any format without written permission.

The Project

During the summer of 2000, Mr. Lane photographed plants around his home in Holyrood. All photos on this site were taken within 50 m from his house.  Throughout the summer, he continued shooting photos of the plants and learning to identify them.  He realized that a web site with many photographs would make identification of plants much easier. You can take a Virtual Tour of his property by clicking the link on the left.  He has been adding to his collection of plant photographs over the past 5 years and will use them to update this site.

Scientific Names

Students have tried to identify all species and we have received help from the scientific community.  When a species was too difficult, they left the scientific name off the page. If you find inaccuracies in the information, please let me know by email.

Contests

This project was originally entered in 2 competitions:

International Cyberfair 2001

Communities@ca

NOTE

Because this project was entered in two different competitions, we developed different home pages for each competition. However, the links inside this site will take you to a generic HOME. It is suggested that you read Our Story before continuing.
